Sarpaneva Lunations

Sarpaneva is synonymous with the moonphase complication, so it’s only fitting that when Stepan decided to create his own movement for their marquee piece it would be centred around this most magical of complications. 

While most watchmakers tend to add a moonphase into an existing movement, this movement was designed around it. Enlisting help from the legendary Andreas Strehler, they created what is now known as the ‘Moonment’ with a moonphase accurate to within a day for 14,000 (!) years. It has a very specific construction with the going train and balance situated in the upper half of the movement, leaving the lower half dedicated to the oversized moonphase display which is created using optical fibres, which is laser engraved and hand finished. The optic fibre actually magnifies the moonphase disc on the backside of the watch, and creates a stunning effect, especially in low-light condition.  It’s utterly mesmerising to wind the 60 hour power reserve into the watch with the visible barrel sitting at 9, with the trademark Sarpaneva melancholy moon staring back at you. It truly feels alive.

All of this exists in the traditional K3 case, which is 42mm in diameter and just 9.8mm thick. These cases tend to wear smaller than the specs suggest due to the very short lugs and scalloped case with a lug-to-lug of just 46mm, so more in line with a traditional 40mm.

This particular piece was purchased direct from Sarpaneva in May 2022 and presents in TZ 'Near Mint' condition, with only the very lightest hints of use present. Please see images for full condition details.

It’s currently mounted to the brilliant black Sarpaneva ‘gator strap on steel tang buckle also includes another in tan, as well as the fabulous Sarpaneva rubber strap. All straps have their own buckle.
