Grand Seiko Hi-Beat GMT Blue Ceramic Limited Edition SBGJ229
One of Grand Seiko's wildest creations, it's also one of their coolest. Released in 2018 as a limited run of 350 pieces in celebration of 20 years of the legendary 9S Hi-Beat movement, the SBGJ229 is a true beast of a watch that is unlike anything else out there.Featuring a 46.5mm x 52.5mm x 15mm case made of a mix of titanium and blue ceramic, and what is so interesting about this particular design other than the colour is that the ceramic sections are screwed into the case. Why is that interesting? Well, as scratch resistant as ceramic is, it can crack if dropped/hit hard. If this should ever happen to these sections they could simply be replaced during service, which is a lot more cost effective than replacing an entire case. So you have a case that is highly scratch resistant, but without the drawbacks of ceramic.
The 24-hr bezel is also fashioned in ceramic, and within this sits an absolutely stunning anniversary dial with repeating GS logos swirling out from the centre pinion in a deep blue. The indices are our favourite part of the watch. Applied and lumed, the way they catch the light is breathtaking, taking on an almost indigo colour. This is matched with the date window at 3. Atop this dial sits the typically amazing razor-sharp hand finished brushed and polished hands.
Powering it is the iconic 9S86 Hi-Beat movement regulated to an extra level, as indicated on the dial with the 'Special' notation above six, and the gold medallion within the rotor. What this means is that it is regulated beyond the already impressive 9S86, and is reserved only for their most significant timepieces.
Finishing it off is a titanium and ceramic bracelet echoing the construction of the case.
This particular piece was first sold in 2018 and presents in TZ 'Excellent' condition. The case is extremely clean as you'd expect of ceramic, with only very minor hints of wear. The case back shows some scratching, and there's a small mark on the crystal near 12. Please see images for full condition details.
Bracelet is fully linked, with enough spares to suit a 21cm wrist. Shows desk diving marks, which is the reason for the 'Excellent' rather than 'Near Mint' grading.
Was serviced by authorised Grand Seiko service centre Neville Cox Watchmaking in Perth in January 2025, and remains under the balance of their 12 month service warranty.

Not for everyone, but if you have the wrist to wear it then this is one of the coolest GS' references of the past decade, and rarely seen on the local market.
