Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1530 - 1978
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1530
Most folks have never heard of the Rolex, 1530 but in our opinion it is one of the coolest references in the vintage catalogue.
At first glance most people think it's an Oysterquartz, but look a little closer and you'll see this is the model that pre-dates the Oysterquartz and was clearly the inspiration behind the new Land-Dweller. The story goes that Rolex was still developing their in-house quartz movement after pivoting away from the Beta 21 movement, and the case and bracelet were ready before the movements were. So Rolex cased up the venerable 1570 automatic movement and put it into the new Oysterquartz case and voila, the 1530 was born. Produced only for a very short 3 year run, there is rumoured to have been only about 1500 units produced, making them one of the rarest references, and one of the most desirable in our opinion.
This particular piece was from our own personal collection. Purchased in 2020, we received it and sent it off for service with highly respected independent Rolex specialist Woods Watchmaking here in Australia, who performed a movement overhaul while leaving the case and bracelet alone.
The dial is original, and in wonderful condition. There's some partial tritium loss on the plots, specifically the 6 plot which is mostly gone, but otherwise outstanding. Lots of these pieces have heavy staining and scratching, but this shows only some small marks. It has aged to a lovely champagne hue.
Hands appear original, and match the plots.
Case is excellent. Shows wear consistent with age, but retains strong lines. Lugs remain very thick and even, with clear markings on their rear
Movement is a 1570 and running beautifully after its recent service in 2020. Keeping time at around +10 secs per day at over 300 degrees of amplitude measured dial-up on a timegrapher.
Bracelet is a Rolex 17000 with a B code on the clasp dating it to 1977. Very tight condition, and will fit roughly a 7.5in wrist or less.
Comes as watch and copy of service receipt from Woods Watchmaking.
Lovely example that is a rapidly appreciating and seldom-seen reference in this condition.
