A. Lange & Sohne Grand Lange 1 Rose Gold 117.032

The Grande Lange 1 series was introduced in 2003, and was designed for those who loved the classic Lange 1 design but perhaps found the original size of 38.5mm a little too diminutive for their wrists. The first generation pieces were 41.9mm in diameter, and utilised the same movement as the 38.5mm Lange 1, resulting in overlapping subdials which was certainly distinctive, but perhaps less harmonious than the 38.5mm originals. In 2012 the line was updated, and gained a new calibre made specifically for the larger case size, which was now 40.9mm, and with this larger calibre much of the perfect balance of the 38.5's dial was retained, just in a size that suited those who were larger of wrist.

This is a second generation piece, and thus the rose gold case that measures in at 40.9mm, with a lug-to-lug of 49mm and a thickness of just 8.8mm. It houses a brilliant silver argenté dial, and is powered by the then-new Lange Caliber L095.1 hand-winding mechanical movement with twin barrels and a 72 hour power reserve. As you'll note it is perfectly sized to the case as should be the Lange way.

The L901.5 is as gorgeous and well finished as ever, perhaps even more so than the later models. We tend to be of the belief that the earlier executions of the Lange 1 were better finished, and the Glashutte stripes are visually very deep, with the retention of the islands in the calibre as opposed to the latest models which have lost this. It's finished off with a padded 'gator strap with the fantastic Lange tang buckle in rose gold.

This particular example was sold in circa 2012 and presents in TZ 'Good' condition. The case presents very well, and shows swirls and hairlines from regular use. There's also very small pin dents present on the bezel, and some small dings on then lugs under close inspection which is the reason for the 'Good' rather than 'Excellent' grading according to the TZ scale. The strap remains in excellent condition, and the buckle shows minor desk diving marks.

No service history that we're aware of. It's likely due for one based on time, but is currently keeping time at around -2 seconds a day at 230 degrees of amplitude dial-up on the timegrapher.
