Breitling Navitimer 806 Twin Jets Big Eye
Breitling Navitimer 806 Twin Jets Big Eye
An evolution of the earlier Chronomat, conceived as a tool for use on land, the Navitimer was introduced in 1952 as a specific tool to be used in the air at the request of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in the US resulting in a chronograph with the ability for in-flight calculations like fuel use, speed, and distance. The earliest pieces were even adorned with the AOPA logo under 12, which later moved to the Twin Jet logo in the mid-60's. This collaboration created one of the most iconic and enduring designs in the horological world, and it's a mainstay of the Breitling line even today.
This particular example would date to circa-1970, and features a stainless steel case that measures in at a contemporary 41mm across the bezel, and around 13mm in thickness including the domed plexi. It's this contemporary sizing that is a large reason why it is so popular even today, and wears like a thoroughly modern watch, but with oodles of vintage charm. The best of both worlds. The case is in stunning condition, with thick, even lugs, sharp bevels, excellent finishes, and clear stampings on the caseback.
The Big Eye reverse Panda tritium dial is in lovely condition, with an even patina across the slide rule section. These are often in very poor condition, but here it has aged in a beautiful way.
Hands looks to have been relumed at some point as they light up under UV, with the dial not exhibiting any reaction under UV. Bezel rotates easily.
Movement is a manually wound Venus 178. Specific service history is unknown. Chrono starts, stops and resets as it should. Winds smoothly and keeps time at around +24 seconds a day at 256 degrees of amplitude dial-up on a timegrapher.
Currently mounted to an aftermarket German leather strap with generic tang buckle.
No box or papers. Comes with Watch Vault cleaning cloth and Watch Vault Travel Pod.
