Cartier Santos Carrée 2961
Cartier has had a huge resurgence of late within the watch collector community, and with very good reason. Not only the originator of the wrist-watch as we know it today, their unfailing dedication to their own aesthetic makes them instantly recognisable, and are deserving of the respect and reverence they command.
Along with the Tank line, the Cartier Santos line is perhaps their most well known, with this iconic line being widely recognised as the birthplace of the wrist watch. Created at the request of early-Aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont by his friend Louis Cartier, not only was it the first wrist-watch, but also the first tool-watch.
This is the classic 2961 spec, with it's stainless steel case, topped with 18k yellow gold bezel. Being a rectangular watch, it's 29mm x 41mm dimensions tends to wear quite a bit larger than it’s on paper spec suggests. It houses a classic white Cartier 'Swiss' dial with Roman's, blued hands, and discreet date window at 3.
This particular example would date from the late 80's to early 90's and presents in very good neo-vintage condition. The bezel shows scratches and scuffs, with some scratches that can be felt with a finger nail. These tend to be amplified in lightbox photos, so see the photos in natural light to get the best representation of what they look like in person.
The case shows scratches and scuffs commensurate with regular use, and some nicks/dings around the case edges. Case back is in good condition, with most of the red lacquer still in place, and clear serial and reference numbers visible. Crystal shows some very minor marks. The bracelet is a hidden clasp service bracelet, and is in excellent condition with minor desk dive marks. Will fit up to a 7.6in wrist.
Specific service history is unknown, but is keeping time at COSC with over 300 degrees of amplitude, so assuming it had a service when the bracelet was fitted.
