Grand Seiko 44GS Diashock 4420-9000 - 1968
Grand Seiko 44GS Diashock 4420-9000
The 44GS is quite possibly the most significant Grand Seiko ever produced, simple as that. It debuted Taro Tanaka’s Grammar of Design, a set of principles that defined Grand Seiko's aesthetic approach from that point forward. These elements were designed to distance themselves from the traditional Swiss manufacturers, with the design philosophy emphasizing visual clarity, crispness, and legibility, moving away from generic round case designs to unique, angular designs. Key aspects included flat, geometrically perfect surfaces and angles designed to best reflect light, two-dimensional faceted bezels, and mirror-finished cases and dials with no distortion present. It was a masterstroke of design, and endures to this day.
The 4420-9000 was produced for only a short period between 1967-1969 in the Daini factory, who were also responsible for the magnificent 45GS, and this particular version is an early 'Diashock' dial and would hail from 1968.
Case is thick and sharp, and shows some dings and scratches from it's 57 years on this planet, but is quite amazing for its age.
The dial is in excellent condition, with some scratches present near the centre pinion, and some small marks around the dial as per the images. The applied markers and hands show some light marks from services.
The case back shows a full medallion, with crisp markings. The plexi shows minor scratches.
Powering it is the calibre 4420 automatic movement, which is currently keeping COSC time at high 200's amplitude. Service history is unknown.
Currently mounted to an aftermarket saffiano black strap in a short size, with vintage Grand Seiko tang buckle.
No box or papers. Comes with Watch Vault Travel Case and Watch Vault cleaning cloth.
A very rare reference on the secondary market, and one in this sort of condition does not pop up too often. Don't miss it.
