Grand Seiko 4520-7000 Hi-Beat Linen Tropical Dial - 1969
Grand Seiko 4520-7000 Hi-Beat Linen Tropical Dial
One of the most beautiful Grand Seiko pieces ever made, and highly sought after for good reason. The 4520-8000 is part of the 45GS family, featuring Hi-Beat manual wind movements, and produced from 1968-1973 in the famed Daini Seikosha factory who also made the 44GS. While looking quite similar to the 44GS, the 45GS series is quite a bit thinner thanks to its manual wind movement, and in 4520 guise with it's lack of date, is one of the most beautiful and wearable early GS' in our opinion.
This particular reference is the 4520-7000, a more seldom seen variant that added the so called 'Batman' case, with it's broad flanks joining the lugs, and shows the flair for design present in GS in the 1960's. The bezel itself measures in at about 34mm, but the flanks bring the size up to about 37.5mm, making it feel quite substantial on the wrist given its era.
The linen dial is absolutely gorgeous too, especially with the deep, tropical patina that this example has taken on around its centre pinion. The lack of date creates perfect symmetry, and it really is something beautiful to behold in person.
The case is thick and sharp, with clear lines throughout. It shows scratches and marks commensurate with its age, but no large dings/dents etc.
The medallion on the case back is full, and all stampings are very crisp.
The dial is in excellent condition, with a phenomenal patina radiating from the centre pinion. The applied markers and hands are in superb condition.
Plexi shows some scratching.
Powering it is the revered 4520 Hi-Beat automatic movement, which is currently keeping amazing time at around -5 seconds a day dial-up on a timegrapher. Winding is very crisp. Was serviced around 5 years ago locally according to the previous owner, and given the way it is running we have no reason to doubt this.
It comes mounted to a beautiful Fluco Mountain Bear leather strap which is handmade in Germany, with Fluco buckle.
No box or papers.
A very rare reference on the secondary market in this condition. Don't miss it.
