Omega Speedmaster 'Ed White' 105.003-63 - 1963
Omega Speedmaster 'Ed White' 105.003-63
For a lot of Speedmaster enthusiasts, this is the one. And even for those not so familiar with the exact lineage of the Speedmaster who may not know the specific reference 105.003, they likely are aware of the name given to it; the Ed White. Famous for being the first American astronaut to walk in space, Mr White did so with this very reference strapped around his space suit.
Not only is the history of this reference very cool, but so is the watch itself. It used the early 'straight lug' 39mm case, so no twist in it like the later lyre lugs. It also featured no crown guards, the famous 'dot-over-ninety (DON)' bezel, and was the first Speedmaster to feature the baton-style hands we still see today. Oh, and it also happened to be powered by the iconic 321 manual wind movement. It's no wonder this is one of the most coveted vintage Speedmasters.
This particular example was first delivered to Mexico in 1964, and presents in excellent vintage condition. The case is thick and sharp, with even lugs. It shows some small nicks and scratches as you'd expect, but in fantastic condition. Pushers are original, and the crown is a later service replacement.
Bezel appears original, with a uniform fade throughout and marks consistent with its age. Domed Omega plexi is in excellent condition, with minor scratches and Omega logo clearly visible in the centre.
Dial is tritium, and the correct 'non-Professional' stepped configuration. Shows spotting throughout as is typical of this era of Speedmaster. Hands are tritium. Minute hand is missing half of its lume, and what remains is consistent with the hour and chrono seconds hand.
Has been fitted with a clear case back, but also retains its original caseback dated 1963 which would be correct for a watch delivered in 1964.
Comes mounted to a Vinacreations 'gator strap on Omega pin buckle. No original bracelet.
Was recently serviced by Tokyo-based Speedmaster specialist Speedmaster.jp. Currently keeping time COSC time at 300+ degrees of amplitude, with all functions operating as they should.
Comes with Omega extract, service receipt, original caseback, and clear caseback removal tool.
A lovely example of a true icon of the watch world.
