Rolex Day Date 1803 Linen Sigma Dial

This is it, the top of the tree for the Rolex range and the very best series in our opinion. For those unfamiliar with Day Date’s, the 1803 is the first in the series and is differentiated from later models for its pie-pan dial and non-quickset day and date adjustment. This pie-pan dial configuration lends a depth not seen in later models, and the open 6’s and 9’s adds vintage charm. For us, the 36mm is the original and best Day Date configuration, and the 1803 is the pick of the litter.

This particular example dates to circa-1973 and presents in excellent vintage condition. The linen sigma dial is in amazing condition. The tritium plots are all present and full. Correct date wheel with open 6's and 9's. Hands are tritium and match the plots.

The case is in excellent condition for its age, with some light tarnish attesting to little wear in recent years. Lugs are strong, and the numbers are crisp and clear. Shows scratches and marks commensurate with its age, but nothing large. Hallmarks are crisp.

Bracelet appears to be original, with the correct non-hidden clasp. Shows stretch as to be expected, but reasonable for its age. These have adjustment in the clasp only, and will fit roughly a 7-8in wrist without a permanent link being removed.

Unknown service history. Winds smoothly, date and day changes sharply at 12. Keeping time at around +22 secs a day at 250+ degrees of amplitude dial-up on a timegrapher.
